Comic Book Character: SPIDER-MAN

In the History of Marvel Comics, Spider-Man (mind the hyphen) has been around since 1963 and has never ceased to amaze us. Stan Lee and Steve Ditko were the first writer – artist duo to tell us the adventures of a young man with unusual powers. However Ditko left the comic after having had some words with Lee and Lee had to find another artist. He found one in John Romita.

Where Steve Ditko gave us a very quirkey Spidey, Romita proceeded to give us a very straight-forward glamorous / classic Spidey that has been the standard for many years since.

It was only when Todd McFarlane came in, that a new look for the webspinner was promoted.

Gil Kane, Ross Andru, Keith Pollard, John Romita Jr, Ron Frenz, Todd McFarlane, Erik Larsen, John Byrne and many others have drawn the adventures of the funny webslinger but the original artist and writer have never been forgotten.

The history of Spider-Man himself also has not been a bed of roses. Although Stan Lee’s stories were very exciting and had a lot of humour in them as well, more recent writers like Michael Straczynski have gone a bit more dramatic with the webslinger and have put him thru the wringer in more ways than one.

More recently current editor in chief Joe Quesada felt it necessary to undo Spider-Man’s married status to single and student because this is how Spider-Man always should have remained. Personally, I felt this was a big mistake, but who knows, maybe I will be proven wrong.

For me the best Spider-Man stories are those of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, John Romita, Gil Kane and Gerry Conway and Ross Andru. Sure, this is all quite old material but having grown up on those particular stories, they kind of remain special in my heart. I’m sure you’ll understand.

Spider-Man has succeeded in the meantime to be a historic superhero. He has battled DC’s Superman as well as Batman and fought at their sides as well. Also like Superman, Spidey is now going to be up for a new cinematic make over!

Having been a fan for years, I am very interested in seeing what will happen. So in the meantime MAKE MINE MARVEL, guys.
